NEW YOUNG ADULT STUDY GROUP
A new small group/bible study has been formed and is open to the post-high school to mid/late 20’s age group. The sermon from the previous Sunday will be discussed. The group will meet Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the leader’s condominium. Please call the church office at 336-765-8331 for information and location.
TIME CAPSULE OPENED
At our Legacy Sunday luncheon, after the worship service, the contents of a time capsule placed behind the cornerstone of the church on August 17, 1972 were displayed. Trustees of the church knew its approximate location and after some initial probing were able to cut a hole in the wall in the Narthex and remove the box. Prior to Legacy Sunday the box was opened and the contents displayed for all to see.
The first items out of the box were a letter from Sherman Bingham, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at that time, and an antique dollar bill. Mr. Bingham quoted Matthew 6: 19-21 which reminds us that our treasure and heart should be in heaven. He said that the antique dollar bill was left to be used for the Glory of God.
The box also contained lists of church members, members of each Sunday School class, youth members and nursery members. Interestingly, a sign of the era, all names were listed with male names (Mr and Mrs) and the female names were listed in parenthesis. A bulletin stated that there were 420 members, attendance at worship was 175 and Sunday School was 148.
Another sign of change was a budget for 1971 showing expenses of $$28,743. This compares with a budget for 2017 of $229,150.
